Keep South Carolina Wild
These classes train volunteers in the fundamentals of natural history, nature interpretation, and conservation in order to empower them to donate their time to positively impact our natural resources. Classes are led by experts in the fields of natural history, biology, botany, forestry, and geology.
The Midlands Master Naturalist course is part of a statewide Master Naturalist Program coordinated by Clemson University. The mission of the program is to create a corps of citizen volunteers well-trained in the fundamentals of natural history, nature interpretation, and the interface of humans and nature in order to empower them to contribute their time and talents to responsible, science-based environmental stewardship. The Midlands course is hosted by the SCWF and taught by experts in the fields of natural history, botany, biology, forestry, and geology. Students learn identification skills, ecological concepts, and natural history of the plants, animals, and ecosystems encountered.
The Palmetto Pro Birder Program offers one-day Birding Basics Classes, one-day Pro Birder Field Days, and two-day Pro Birder Training Modules. Several of each type of session are held throughout the year, with different instructors, at various locations around the state.
SCWF offers one-day Naturalist Training classes which offer a “sneak peak” into the training provided in the Master Naturalist Program. Each class is focused on a specific topic based on instructor’s expertise, class location, and time of year. All classes are open to anyone ages 16 & up, no prior knowledge required.
In 2020, SCWF began offering FREE Zoom webinars on a variety of topics. Each webinar is recorded and then uploaded to our YouTube Channel. We invite you to join us for our next webinar, and also watch some of our previous webinars through the link below.
SCWF is proud to offer programs which provide women of all ages with the skills needed to participate in outdoor recreation – including archery, birding, fishing, hunting, kayaking, paddleboarding, and much more. We now offer two retreats each year, POWR and POWR Up, for women to learn these skills in a supportive environment – see below for details on each of these retreats. We also offer one-day workshops called POWR+ throughout the year in locations around the state to build upon the topics introduced in the retreats.
